Reading in Finance

This week’s reading made me consider how difficult reading and conveying information must have been in the realm of Finance before the advent of our current technologies. Looking at any article on financial news sites like cnbc.com or thestreet.com it seems every fifth word is hyperlinked to another page. In many cases this is necessary because of the many complicated terms used in these articles. Also, articles describing anything from the stock market to the economics of entire countries usually have graphs or pictures. Current technology further increases the usefulness of these tools, as they can be animated to give further understanding of the subject matter.

While this is a YouTube video and not technically an example of reading, it does show how illustrations can be more understandable when animated. It also shows how important visuals are in finance discussions, because many times the numbers being discussed are so large context is necessary to give an appreciation for what the numbers mean.
