Mapping and Social Networking Analysis

I see the use of mapping and social networking analysis as a major part of business. Thousands of websites have a related topics section on every article that is posted. Websites like YouTube is a prime example of this. I can’t count how many hours of my life I have wasted on YouTube watching videos because the related content section on the sidebar. Once a user clicks on one video, their are dozens more right next to it with similar tags. Television devices like Tivo uses this type of technique also. The device will actually record shows for the user that are similar to the ones they record themselves.

Internet shopping sites such as Amazon pay very close attention to what their customers purchase. Any item viewed on Amazon has a “Many customers who purchased this item also purchased…” box on the original items page. One of many websites major goals is to get the user to spend as much time as possible on their site and to click as many links as possible on their websites in order for them to make more money. Websites such as Hulu tailor their advertisements specifically to the user. All of this is done by carefully observing peoples behavior on the internet.
