The Crisis: Voyant Tools Lab

While going through The Crisis, our group picked a couple of words to focus in on using Voyant Tools. The words chosen by our group were “free” and “colored”. One thing we found interesting was that, once we searched the word “free”, there were many instances and phrases that contained the word, not just the word itself. This goes to serve as an overall theme for The Crisis as a whole. Nina looked into the graph of the word “colored” and saw that it was consistently used throughout the paper.

When using Voyant Tools, we are basically stripping down the text to a very raw form. Seeing the frequency “free” in a graphical interphase helps the reader understand the importance of the word. The ability to go back and forth from the graph to the issue that the graph element derives from affects our interpretation in a sense that we now have the ability to break down this text word by word. It gives us a better idea of how to grasp the author’s intentions and thought-process while writing a particular article. However, while taking apart the piece word-by-word, the user can lose the authenticity of the final and published work.
